Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech to Ouarzazate
Depart Marrakech early and travel across the winding Tizi-n-Tichka Pass (2,260m), passing Berber villages and terraced fields. Stop at Kasbah Telouet, a beautifully crumbling fortress of the Glaoui family, tucked into the mountains. Continue along the ancient caravan route to Ait Ben Haddou, Morocco’s most iconic kasbah, featured in films like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. After exploring its narrow alleys, head to Ouarzazate, the “Hollywood of Africa,” for dinner and overnight in a charming riad.
Day 2: Ouarzazate to Dades Valley
After breakfast, explore Kasbah Taourirt or visit Atlas Film Studios, then journey through the lush Skoura Oasis and stop at the well-preserved Kasbah Amridil. Continue to the Valley of Roses, famous for its rosewater cooperatives, and enjoy a scenic drive through the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. Arrive in the Dades Valley, where winding roads reveal incredible rock formations and traditional kasbahs nestled into the cliffs. Overnight in a guesthouse with a view of the valley.
Day 3: Dades Valley to Erg Chebbi
In the morning, explore the Dades Gorges, home to dramatic rock formations and fertile oases. Then head to the Todra Gorges, where towering cliffs reach up to 300 meters high—a favorite spot for climbers. After lunch, continue to Erfoud, known for its fossil workshops and ancient underground water channels (khettarat). In the late afternoon, arrive at Merzouga, where you’ll mount your camel and trek across the dunes of Erg Chebbi at sunset. At your luxury desert camp, enjoy tea, a candlelit dinner, and Berber music around the fire.
Day 4: Merzouga to Zagora
After sunrise and breakfast in the desert, begin your journey south through ever-changing desert landscapes. Stop in Rissani, a historic market town and former caravan center, before continuing through the remote towns of Alnif and Tazzarine. Enjoy scenic views of vast plateaus and the distant Anti-Atlas mountains. Pause in Nkob, a quiet village known for its many kasbahs, before entering the lush Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest palm oasis. Arrive in Zagora by evening for dinner and overnight in a comfortable riad or hotel.
Day 5: Zagora to Marrakech
After breakfast, travel through the Draa Valley, a lush river oasis that winds past kasbahs, groves of date palms, and ancient mudbrick villages. Stop for lunch in the town of Agdz or at a panoramic viewpoint. Cross the Anti-Atlas Mountains and then the High Atlas once more, enjoying several scenic stops before arriving in Marrakech by evening.
